In the Gemara Shabbat, page 119b, Abaye states that the sole reason Jerusalem was destroyed was because the Jews did not observe Shabbat. This is true for the people as a whole, but also for each individual Jew.
By reciting the Kiddush on Saturday morning, we are reminded that Shabbat is a distinctive sign, a covenant between God and each of us. An individual covenant, a uniform, a passport—that's what Shabbat is!
So, just like during the COVID period, there are those who have their vaccination certificate and those who are looking for an excuse.
There are those who observe Shabbat, and then there are those who don't.
One hundred years ago, one could hope for justifications, fear for employment, and even fear of ending up in prison.
Today, too many Jews are trapped by living in high-rise buildings with electrical security systems, locks, and lighting incompatible with Shabbat. This can be remedied, but it's difficult.
But how can one justify violating Shabbat because of a measly refrigerator? Because it's too heavy to move?
Observing Shabbat is easy and there's nothing more rewarding!
